Your Title:

Personal Financial Counselor;
Financial Coach

What You Will Do: 

Provide personal and family financial counseling, planning, education, awareness information services, appropriate referrals and assistance to military families.

Specific responsibilities may include:

  • One-on-One financial counseling to assist individuals and families reduce or eliminate debt, develop financial goals, establish/manage a budget, etc.
  • Group Presentations or Workshops to increase awareness and educate individuals and military families on a number of personal and family finance topics.
  • Provide assistance on military specific topics including: transition assistance, wounded warrior, survivorship, pre-deployment financial preparation, etc.

Most of these positions are on-call and are flexible in terms of work hours. Most require a weekend event where the counselor would present information to the audience in a group setting or one-on-one sessions.

What Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Will Make You Successful: 

Financial counseling skills: Many of the interactions and presentations will require a solid understanding of basic money management skills. It will require working with individuals and families facing financial challenges amid difficult work environments and mobility.

Experience with the military: These opportunities require an individual to be knowledgeable and engaged with a military audience. Topics may include: transition assistance, wounded warrior, survivorship, pre-deployment financial preparation, etc. Training on military protocol and information is provided once hired.

Where You Should Start: 

A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree with 2+ years experience in financial counseling or education.

A national certification – Accredited Financial Counselor (AFC®), Certified Financial Planner (CFP®) or Chartered Financial Consultant (ChFC®).

Your Salary Potential: 

Varies. Usually paid on an hourly basis.

Many positions are contract only, meaning no benefits and no steady work or income. These positions are a nice side opportunity for supplemental income and/or volunteer work.
