The AFC® certification mark represents the highest standard of excellence in the field of financial counseling and education.

The path to AFC certification is intentionally designed as one of the most rigorous and thorough programs in the industry. As an AFC, you gain not only credibility in your field, but confidence in your actions. You aren’t satisfied with best guesses and gut reactions, and neither are we. The AFC certification program is guided by research, rooted in academia, and supported by industry experts.

AFC® Core Competencies

AFC certification helps you better understand how diverse backgrounds, perspectives, and experiences impact your clients’ money behaviors. A lens of cultural competency is woven throughout the program. 

The AFC Core Competencies guide our education pathways and serve as an outline for the exam.

Competencies listed below are effective March 1, 2025. For current competencies, see link below.

  1. Establish the counseling environment
    1. Create an inclusive, welcoming, and private space
    2. Provide an overview of the financial counseling process
    3. Inform client of the terms of the client‐counselor relationship (for example: confidentiality, privacy, ethics, client and counselor roles and responsibilities, fiduciary)

Every five years AFCPE® conducts a national job analysis survey to determine the scope of practice and develop a list of knowledge areas that reflect the role of financial counselor. 

This survey is used to develop a new exam content outline. The new outline will be effective March 1, 2025. A summary of changes is below and the full outline is available at the following link.

  1.  The changes to the core competencies were minimal and all existing study materials and pathways will continue to adequately prepare candidates for the AFC® exam.
  2. Changes were focused on simplification and organization of the core competencies to make it easier for candidates to understand.
  3. Some examples were removed because they were thought to be leading and limiting.
  4. Pronouns were changed to use gender-neutral language.
