Military Series: Be a Transition Superstar! Helping Transitioning Service Members Fill In the Finances for Transition Gaps

All servicemembers must go through a Department of Defense (DoD) standardized Finances for Transition class when they transition from military service through the mandatory Transition Assistance Program (TAP). However, the curriculum is the same for all members regardless of age, years of service, rank, or whether they are retiring or separating. The reality is that this “one size fits all” curriculum is often lacking the resources to assure an effective financial transition for servicemembers. This presentation will draw on experiences from teaching the required transition class and understanding its shortfalls, but also incorporating the real-world experience of members who have already experienced the transition. This will provide relevant insight and tools that financial counselors can use to supplement the required training and provide value added services to contribute to the financial successes of servicemembers and their family post-transition. We will discuss the psychology of money in the transition, cashflow and pay schedule management realities, strategic retirement contributions, various state resources, managing health cost expectations, and more. We will also identify how financial concerns differ depending on whether a member is retiring or separating and how to identify and address misconceptions about VA compensation.

$50/Free for members
