How did you learn about the FINRA Foundation Military Spouse Fellowship?
I learned about the FINRA Foundation Military Spouse Fellowship when I was employed as a Family Readiness Support Assistant (FRSA) for the US Army.
Why did you decide to apply and pursue the AFC?
As a Social Worker, the AFC training provides me the tools to help Soldiers, Veterans, and Families address their housing, educational, career, and personal needs and goals.
What was something that you got out of the program that you didn’t initially anticipate?
I was not anticipating the content of the first five chapters: the Counseling Environment, Client Information, Strategic Counseling Plan, Client Goals, and Strategies to Attain Goals. These five modules served as a review of what I learned in my Master of Social Work program and are crucial in establishing rapport with my clients.
How did the AFC enhance or add to your existing professional skills (your toolbox)?
The AFC program and credential enhance my existing professional skills to help Service Members understand and prepare for the changes in their financial picture as they exit the military.
What has been the most meaningful or important aspect of the AFC in the work you are currently doing?
The most meaningful aspect of the AFC in the work that I do is the face of surprise on the Soldiers’ faces when they learn a new fact or technique. Seeing them absorb the education and implement the knowledge is what makes this worthwhile.
